In Malaysia’s high court, pathologist testifies Kim Jong Nam was killed by weapon of mass destruction

Saturday, October 7, 2017

On Wednesday, pathologist Mohd Shah Mahmood testified before Malaysia’s high court in the trial of Siti Aisyah and Doan Thi Huong, who stand accused of killing Kim Jong Nam, the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Mohd Shah, an employee of the Malaysian government, testified that VX nerve agent, by international treaty a weapon of mass destruction, caused Kim’s death, and Judge Azmi Ariffin officially admitted tissue and fluid samples as evidence. Both Aisyah and Huong are subject to the death penalty if convicted of killing Kim.

The samples were sealed in plastic when presented at court, but the judge and lawyers for both the prosecution and defense nonetheless wore protective gloves and masks to examine them. Both the North Korean government and Aisyah’s lawyer have said the victim may have died of a heart attack or some cause other than VX nerve agent.

Mohd Shah based his conclusion on VX nerve agent in Kim’s system and on the timing of Kim’s death: he expired on the way to a hospital, less than two hours after encountering Aisyah and Huong. He also testified Kim Jong Nam had six different medications in his system, one a common Viagra heart-condition treatment, but no indications of a heart attack when he examined Kim’s body. He also said neither this nor the other medicines Kim was taking would have killed him quickly.

Aisyah’s lawyer, Gooi Soon Seng, argued the autopsy reports indicate only that Kim was killed by chemical poisoning, not necessarily by VX nerve agent, and Mohd Shah admitted under cross-examination he does not have much experience with VX and other nerve agents.

Siti Aisyah, 25, and Doan Thi Huong, age given as 28 or 29, pled not guilty of murdering Kim Jong Nam on Monday, though they do not contest they met him. Both were represented by lawyers hired by their home countries’ respective governments. Both women are on video approaching Kim in Kuala Lumpur International Airport where one of them sprayed him with liquid, but they both claimed they had been hired to spray travelers with a harmless substance as part of a prank TV show. Aisyah’s lawyer, Gooi Soon Seng, told the press his client had already performed the prank several times, always with oil or pepper. According to the police, the two men who hired Huong and Aisyah were Hong Song Hac and Ri Ji U, North Koreans who avoided questioning by, respectively, fleeing Malaysia and remaining within the North Korean embassy.

Huong’s lawyer, Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, said after a prosecution phase of probably about two months, at the Judge’s discretion the defense would proceed. Proceedings earlier this week included testimony from an airport employee, a police officer who spoke to the dying Kim, and pathologists who examined samples from Kim, Huong and Aisyah. Dr. Norashikin Othman of Hospital Kuala Lumpur testified Kim Jong Nam’s blood, liver and other tissues appeared to have been depleted of cholinesterase, an enzyme we need to move. “The low cholinesterase level in Kim Chol could be caused by exposure to poisons such as insecticide or nerve agents,” he said, and that Huong and Aisyah both had normal levels of cholinesterase. He said the two women could have protected themselves by washing their hands, which both women did that day, or by taking antidote.

Gooi Soon Seng told the press the prosecution had not disclosed this information to the defense before Norashikin’s testimony: “This piece of evidence was never served to us”.

South Korean intelligence has maintained this was part of a plan on the part of Kim Jong Un or his government to assassinate Kim Jong Nam, who had once been his father Kim Jong Il’s heir apparent. They had a falling out in 2001 and Kim Jong Nam had been living quietly with his family in Macao.

The events surrounding Kim’s death have included diplomatic troubles between the formerly friendly North Korea and Malaysia, a hostage exchange, ambassador expulsions, and a break-in at the mortuary that housed Kim’s remains.

Earlier statements from Malaysia’s health ministry asserted Kim died within twenty minutes of his encounter at the airport, but testimony given this week differed from this.

Hope fades for families of trapped Mexican miners

Hope fades for families of trapped Mexican miners

Wednesday, February 22, 2006

Almost 600 desperate family members and others remained camped outside the Pasta de Conchos coal mine near San Juan de Sabinas, in the northern Mexico state of Coahuila where 65 Mexican miners were trapped by a gas explosion around 2:30 a.m. (0830 GMT) Sunday. Some are threatening to storm the mine while soldiers are trying to keep them calm and rescuers continue to pick through the rock and debris with hand tools, fearing that any power equipment might set off another explosion.

The local newspaper’s headline caused panic by quoting one of over a dozen surviving miners who were close enough to the exits to escape: “They are surely dead,” (La Prensa de Monclova). However, Arturo Vilchis, Civil Protection Director, refused to speculate on the condition of the miners, while Javier de la Fuente, an engineering contractor with mine owner Grupo México S.A. de C.V. also tried to hold out some hope.

The men were each supposed to be carrying oxygen tanks, each with a six hour supply, and there’s some hope that they could reach other oxygen supply tanks, or that some air might be reaching them through the ventilation shafts into which rescuers have been pumping more oxygen since shortly after the explosion.

Juan Rebolledo, vice president of international affairs for Grupo México, assured onlookers that U.S. mining experts were on the way, and officials at the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration have confirmed that they’ve sent a specialized equipment truck and several mining experts which should arrive at the mine site on Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile Consuelo Aguilar, a spokeswoman for the National Miners’ Union, called for an investigation into Grupo México’s responsibility for the disaster. Pedro Camarillo, a federal labor official, said nothing unusual was found during a routine evaluation in early February.

Its Summer Camp Season How Will Your Kids Get There?}

Click Here To Know More About:

Submitted by: Alice Sutton

The school was about to end and summer holidays were now in the row and my blood pressure was going high with the thought that the kids will be at home for six long weeks. For kids, the summer break is an exciting time as no homework and lots of freedomfor working parents, its a bit of a nightmare as we need to find something to keep them occupied.

I have managed to sign off my kids for different week-long summer camps, and did all arrangements for their travelling. So I was all set, right? Wrong as my kids had already planned that they want to join acting classes and that also at Luxembourg. It is a two hours journey from our house in Belgium. The logistic challenge was just about to start. Every week theres a new and different schedule, and both kids were attending different acting camp in the same Acting school, so timings were different.

I was shocked with the thought of driving them to camp two times a day rather four times as it would be a two and fro journey. I wish each summer camp could tell me who in our neighborhood is also going, or ideally offer carpool transportation setup. During my research I came across covoiturage Belgique and covoiturage Luxembourg, where I could get many parents and travelers who travel from Belgium and Luxembourg on daily basis. Now I had to only register myself and look for people offering carpooling. Then I have to schedule all the days we need to get the kids there and back, and then book the ride. The challenge of time schedule change of camps was no more going to bother us.

My research showed that there are some sites, which particularly help all parents by providing a platform that will make setting up and managing carpools as easy as possible. With family accounts, its easy to add each child to the appropriate carpool with a tap of the screenand easily assign your babysitter or other family member to drive.

I booked all rides from Belgium to Luxembourg from covoiturage Belgique and same way Luxembourg to Belgium were booked from covoiturage Luxembourg.

Booking a ride is a very simple process just login select your destination and you will get the option of the ride and timing slots to select, just select and be ready for a call from your driver. The overall money you save from carpooling is difficult to believe and sometimes you might get the best deal if you are lucky enough to book the ride on right time.

I am very happy that I selected the right carpooling option rather than other available options. My kids are happy too as they have made new buddies and are comfortable to travel with them. My son also likes the idea of travelling in new cars every time.

According to me if used wisely carpooling can be your best mate in terms of time, comfort and money.

About the Author: Alice Sutton author, who often uses covoiturage de Belgique to Luxembourg for her personal work. She is not using carpooling only for these two cities but also use it for others too.More Info:

Interview: Drupal founder Dries Buytaert balances community and company interests

Sunday, February 24, 2008

In the year 2000, Dries Buytaert created Drupal, a freely licensed and open source tool to manage websites, as a bulletin board for his college dorm. Since Dries released the software and a community of thousands of volunteer developers have added and improved modules, Drupal has grown immensely popular. Drupal won the overall Open CMS Award in 2007, and some speakers in Drupal’s spacious developer’s room at FOSDEM 2008 were dreaming aloud of its world domination.

Buytaert (now 29) just finished his doctoral thesis and has founded the start-up Acquia. The new company wants to become Drupal’s best friend, with the help of an all-star team and US$7 million collected from venture capitalists. Wikinews reporter Michaël Laurent sat down with Dries in Brussels to discuss these recent exciting developments.

Massachusetts lawmakers enact plan for universal health coverage

Massachusetts lawmakers enact plan for universal health coverage

Friday, April 7, 2006Legislators in the Massachusetts General Court, their name for the state legislature, approved legislation on Tuesday, April 4, that would make it the first state in the United States to require all residents to have health insurance and impose penalties for non-compliance. Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, a Republican who is expected to run for U.S. President in 2008, is expected to sign the bill.

The bill passed the lower house, the Massachusetts House of Representatives by a vote of 155-2, and unanimously by the state senate. The Democratic Party holds supermajorities in both houses of the legislature.

Among the bill’s provisions are these:

  1. Businesses that employ more than 10 people are required to provide health insurance for all staff or face fines of $295 per year per uninsured worker.
  2. Individuals will be required to enroll in a health plan by July 1, 2007, or face tax penalties.
  3. Health insurers will provide partially to fully subsidized coverage for low-income residents.

At least one other state (Hawaii) requires employers to provide employee health insurance, but no other state holds individuals accountable for coverage.

Google removes some street view images

Saturday, March 21, 2009

Google’s release of Google Street View, which is a panoramic street-mapping tool, has sparked complaints which have forced the company to remove some images.

Some of the images that were removed have been said to depict individuals, such as a man entering a sex shop, a person throwing up, and people being arrested.

Google has stated that if anyone wanted their picture removed, they would do so. “We’ve got millions of images, so the percentage removed was very small,” said Laura Scott, a spokesperson for Google, to the BBC. “We want this to be a useful tool and it’s people’s right to have their image removed. The fact there are now gaps [in Street View] shows how responsive we are,” she added.

Street View was released on May 25, 2007, and is available in many different countries, including the United States, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain and Italy.

How To Filet A Fish

How To Filet A Fish

by

Gregg Hall

I have been an avid fisherman since I was a child, which was quite awhile ago. I have been fishing regularly for over 30 years and I have seen a lot of people who cannot properly clean their fish after catching it so I thought I might offer a little guidance.

First, it is absolutely crucial that you have a very sharp knife. I personally use an electric filet knife a lot, but you really have to have some experience to be able to use one properly. Using a standard filet knife, I prefer to use one with about an eight inch blade unless I am filleting a large gamefish in which case I will break out my Crocodile Dundee Alaskan Filet knife.

YouTube Preview Image

To begin filleting the fish, place it on a sturdy surface preferably about waist high for comfort. Take the tip of the knife and insert it along the dorsal fin of the fish and make small cuts towards the head keeping the blade against the bones of the fin. Now make a deep cut right behind the gill plate from the belly vertically up to the back of the fish meeting the cut you made along the spine.

Now, go back to the spine area where you made your fist cuts and now take deeper cuts following along the spine and ribcage and then work your way towards the tail. Stop short of the tail leaving that intact so that the filet you have is still attached to the rest of the fish at that point. Turn the fish so that the belly is towards you now and make any cuts to separate your filet in that area, then flip the filet over so that the scales are down and the meat side is up. This is where you really need to be sure your knife is sharp, starting near the tail hold the blade of your knife close as possible to the skin of the fish and begin to slide the blade back and forth towards the shoulder of the fish until you have completely removed the meat from the skin.

The final step for this side of the fish is to check the lateral line for small bones and cartilage and the bloodline. Some fish such as amberjack will have a large bloodline which you will want to remove for optimum taste. After you are sure all the bones and bloodline have been removed place this filet to the side and start on the next side. Doing it in this order is a personal preference, you can also complete the filleting of the other side first and then do the fine tuning of removing the bloodline and small bones.
