Broken stormwater drain led to Guatemala sinkhole

Broken stormwater drain led to Guatemala sinkhole

Tuesday, March 6, 2007

A rupture in the underground stormwater drain system opened a huge sinkhole on February 23, killing three people and bringing down twelve houses in Guatemala City.

Teenagers Irma and David Soyos and their father, 53-year old Domingo Soyos were killed when their house collapsed into the sinkhole. Nearly a thousand people were evacuated from the San Antonio neighborhood after the collapse.

Wikinews interviewed Eric Haddox, a civil engineer who has visited the site of the sinkhole and spoken to the engineers working on fixing the drain. Mr. Haddox, who specialises in the building of earthworks, roads, water supply and sewage systems, and is working as a missionary in Guatemala, visited the site following the collapse to help in the recovery effort.

Mr. Haddox told us that the size of the hole is much smaller than the 330 feet depth originally reported and that the erosion causing the collapse is believed to have happened over a long time, and not just during the recent rains as initially suspected.

There are also concerns that a four-story building less than a metre from the edge of the hole may collapse as the earth under the building continues to be eroded.

Before the collapse, a junction box linked two collector pipes to a 3.5m main pipe leading to a nearby canyon in a system believed to be 20 to 50 years old. The surrounding earth had been filled in artificially to level the ground, but the fill was not well compacted before being built upon. Such leveling of the ground is widespread in Guatemala city.

It is thought that, at some point in the last 20 years, either one of the collector pipes ruptured or was detached from the junction box, possibly because of seismic activity. Water gushing out of the break following rainstorms gradually eroded the loosely compacted soil, creating an expanding cavern around the junction box. On February 23, the roof of this cavern collapsed, creating the sinkhole, 20m wide at the top and tapering out towards the bottom, which is about 60m (204 feet) deep, not 330 feet as originally reported.

“Things like this don’t happen often and there are many interesting engineering lessons to be learned with them”, Mr. Haddox said.

The sinkhole has continued to expand even after the collapse, since the collector pipes continue to carry water, which cascades 15m down the sinkhole to the main pipe, further eroding the sides of the sinkhole. The hole was about 25m wide at the top and 40m wide at the bottom a week ago.

A bypass pipe is being laid to divert the water away from the junction to arrest further erosion. The sinkhole will then have to be drained before repair work can begin.

Authorities are also concerned that similar breakages and undermining may be happening at other locations, Mr. Haddox said. Muddy water has been seen coming out of the main collector pipes, but it is not certain whether this is due to ruptures elsewhere or simply mud from the surface that has been washed into the drainage system.

Wikimania 2007 begins in Taipei, Taiwan

Friday, August 3, 2007

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

The third annual conference for users of the Wikimedia Foundation projects, Wikimania, began today in Taipei, Taiwan. Over 1,100 people registered from 98 countries. Fifty-five percent of attendees were from Taiwan. There are over 100 presenters holding a total of 65 sessions.

Florence Devouard, Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation, in the opening to the conference, reviewed what has been accomplished in the past year. Among the accomplishments are the creation of the Wikimedia Taiwan chapter, and the creation of Wikiversity. Florence also said that the Russian Wikipedia was the fastest growing Wikipedia, with the Chinese Wikipedia coming second. There still is huge disparity in language though, with projects such as the Afrikaans Wikipedia having 6 million native speakers, but less than 8,000 articles

An estimation of the current total assets of the foundation was stated to be around $3.5 million. Florence Devouard also discussed the need for scalable sources of revenue for the foundation. These sources, she stressed, must be consistent with the foundation’s non profit status, with the open/free content movement and with community wishes. Potential revenue sources include the continued sale of live datafeeds, a print on demand service, board games, puzzles and other merchandising. She stated that the foundation will not sell DVDs or paper versions due to legal risks.

Also, Jimmy Wales, in the press conference, mentioned that in mainland China, lots of media or information is still unfree or not to be unveiled, such as Baido.com, so that may restrict the development or providing of freely contents and correct information, and is surely not a good example. And then he’ll come to visit mainland China to solve those problems of freely contents developments.

Other speakers included Benjamin Mako Hill discussing the definition of free culture, Kat Walsh on Wikimedia foundation use of free content, Samuel Klein on the one laptop per child and addressing systemic bias, Jimmy Wales, Angela Beesley and Gil Penchina on Wikia.

Click Here To Know More About:

byAlma Abell

There is no question that the health of your mouth, teeth and gums is crucial. In order to keep your mouth healthy, you will need to find a dentist to provide you with oral care. However, with it comes to dentistry in Cedar Rapids, IA, you may think that you do not need to make or keep regular appointments. With the information here you will see why regular dental cleanings are so important.

Prevention of Cavities

The white colored film that you see building up on the surface of your teeth is called plaque. This is also the number one factor that causes tooth decay. Plaque is an acidic substance that will eat away the enamel on the tool if it is not removed, which will cause cavities. The good news is that with brushing, flossing and regular dental cleanings, plaque can be removed.

Prevention of Tooth Loss

Gum disease is a serious issue that many people suffer from. It starts with significant plaque buildup, which is a serious cause of toot loss in adults. If gum disease is allowed to advance, then the plaque can move down your tooth, where it will destroy the bone that supports your jaw, which will cause your teeth to become loose and fall out. The good news is that the likelihood of this happening can be reduced significantly with regular cleanings by your dentist, in addition to great oral hygiene habits at home.

Achieve a Brighter Smile

When you drink wine, tea or coffee or use tobacco, it can cause your teeth to become stained. However, with a dental cleaning you will be able to have all built-up stains removed, leaving your teeth brighter and whiter.

Fresher Breath

When you have good oral hygiene you can prevent the occurrence of persistent bad breath. Even when you floss and brush on a regular basis, having your teeth cleaned is a great way to ensure that your mouth stays healthy and completely odor-free.

Enhance Your Overall Health

There have been a number of studies that have shown that there is a direct connection between your oral health and your overall health. US stock markets reach 12-year lows

US stock markets reach 12-year lows

Thursday, March 5, 2009

US stock markets dropped to twelve-year lows on Thursday, amidst falling confidence in the financial sector and worries over whether the US automobile manufacturer General Motors will be able to keep operating.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 4.08%, or 280.52 points, at the closing bell, reaching a level of 6595.32, a new 12-year low. The Nasdaq Composite lost 54.15 points, or 4%, to 1299.59, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 plunged by 30.27 points, or 4.25%, closing at 682.60.

Every stock in the Dow Jones, other than Wal-Mart, either lost ground or remained even, and all stocks in the S&P 500 index lost ground.

General Motors’ shares lost 15.5% after the auto firm announced that its auditors had “substantial doubt” over whether it would be able to keep operating.

Shares of financial companies were lower by nine percent, with Bank of America losing 11.7% and Citigroup falling by 9.7%.

“What’s most worrisome is that we haven’t hit the crescendo yet,” said Bill Groeneveld, the head trader for vFinance Investments. “Asset-management divisions are getting calls to just liquidate everything, and we haven’t seen the big players come back in at all.”

“This is one of the worst bear markets in the last 100 years; it started out with the credit crisis and the subprime [loans], but it is like a forest fire that has raced across the clearing and ignited other parts: Autos, auto parts, the insurance companies have been hit very hard. The credit crisis is causing an unraveling of industry after industry because the banks don’t lend,” said David Dreman, the chief investment officer of Dreman Value Management.

European markets were also lower today, with the London’s FTSE index losing 3.2% and the DAX index of Germany falling by five percent.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

What A Homeowner Should Expect During Air Conditioning Installation In Sylvania Oh

byAlma Abell

When the heat of the summer sun shines down, it leads to excessive temperatures and causes humidity levels to go through the roof, leading many people to retreat to the safety and comfort of an air-conditioned building. If a home does not have a central AC system, it will most likely cause the interior of the building to become incredibly hot and stuffy and leave those inside uncomfortable. Air conditioning installation in Sylvania OH will help to keep a home cool, and the following is a brief overview of what is involved in the process.

Duct System Installation

YouTube Preview Image

As the air is treated by the system, it is then dispersed throughout a network of ductwork, which ensures that each room in a home is maintained at a comfortable temperature. If an existing duct system is not present, then the technicians will first need to install one. They will work with any attic or basement space to run the ductwork, and slimline systems allow them to fit new equipment in an existing structure easily.

Air Handler and Compressor Placement

The next phase of installation involves placement of the air handler and the exterior compressor unit. The air handler is what moves the air throughout a home, while the compressor is what pressurizes the coolant liquid that then cools the air. Though the technician will be somewhat limited by the size of the units, it is essential for the homeowner to make any requests relating to where the items will be positioned before the start of Air Conditioning Installation in Sylvania OH.

Electrical Connections and System Testing

After all of the mechanical components are in place, an electrician will then be contracted to connect the devices to the main electrical panel. In some cases, they may have to install a dedicated breaker to ensure the equipment has an adequate voltage load to operate without issue. Once all of the items are connected and powered on, the technicians will do a complete system check and ensure the system is working as intended.

Installation of a new AC system is a great way to keep a home comfortable all summer long. The experts at A1 Heating and Home Improvement have more than 20 years of experience repairing and installing both commercial and residential systems. Contact us today to learn more and schedule to get an AC system installation quote.

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

">
Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.
